Open Position: Senior Research Manager
TReNDS is seeking a dynamic and talented mid-career professional to manage a series of strategic research programs relating to data science and new methodological approaches for monitoring sustainable development. The Senior Manager will work closely with the Director of the TReNDS program, as well as the TReNDS members and co-chairs
Responsibilities of the position will include acting as the technical manager of the POPGRID Data Collaborative, which aims to bring together and expand the international community of data providers, users, and sponsors concerned with georeferenced data on population, human settlements and infrastructure. This will require working closely with project partners at the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data (GPSDD).
The Senior Manager will also oversee TReNDS’ data reconciliation projects in Latin America and Africa, and will support a new flagship program on real-time SDG monitoring.
The Senior Manager will have line responsibility for one or more junior research staff, plus interns, and will oversee all relevant project administration, event management, and other tasks that might arise.
Based out of the New York office of the SDSN, the Senior Research Manager will report to the Director of SDSN TReNDS (based in the UK), with support from the Head of SDSN’s NYC Office. The position requires international travel.
A minimum of six years professional experience is preferred, along with a Master’s degree qualification, or higher. Please note that a native command of English (oral and written) is required.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Acting as the technical manager of the POPGRID consortium, convening meetings of the technical partners and leading on research projects and outputs.
Overseeing projects related to data innovation and reconciliation in Latin America, West Africa and potentially other regions, in partnership with local collaborators in each region.
Lead authoring research outputs, including working papers and journal articles.
Line management of one or more research staff.
Providing ongoing support to the Director of TReNDS.
QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate must have the right to work in the United States.
Passion for the mission of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network.
A minimum of 6 year full or part-time work experience in private sector, academia, or government/policy institution(s) with deep knowledge of international development, including data systems for sustainable development.
Outstanding, native English oral communication and writing skills. Full proficiency desirable in one or more other languages, notably Spanish, French or Mandarin.
Good analytical and quantitative skills.
Expertise in georeferenced data and GIS.
Experience working with demographic data, preferred.
A professional and resourceful style with the ability to work independently and to manage multiple tasks and projects at a time.
Advanced degree in economics, development, natural sciences, engineering, business or related discipline.
LOGISTICS
Location: This position will be based in New York City, NY (Please note that candidates must have prior authorization to work in the United States, as we are unable to sponsor visas at this time).
Contract Length: This appointment is valid for a period of one year, subject to renewal upon review of work performance.
Hours: Full time
Salary: The salary for this position is commensurate with experience and includes a generous benefits package.
