Mobilizing the household data required to progress toward the SDGs

Overview

This SDSN Briefing Paper is prepared by the Sabina Alkire, Director, Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) and Emma Samman, Research Fellow, Overseas Development Institute (ODI) and submitted for the Independent Expert Advisory Group (IEAG) on the Data Revolution for Sustainable Development. 

This report examines three main options for collecting post-2015 data:

1. Household survey instruments

a. Large multi-topic household surveys (LSMS, DHS, MICS, national surveys)
b. Quick interim household surveys
c. Public opinion surveys (Gallup, World Values, Regional Barometers, Social Weather Station)

2. Administrative and registry data
3. Big Data: Satellite, marketing, internet/social media, call data records, and other so-called “digital breadcrumbs”
